In Response to Frequently Asked Questions:

Evans High School

My belief regarding Evans High School is that is should be rebuilt on its current site at the corner of Silver Star and Pine Hills.  The businesses there at the corner should be purchased allowing for additional land.  The students attending Evans deserve to have the same beautiful new school built as the other high schools in Orange County have gotten.

Had the County allowed the move to the 9th grade center, the school would have been built on 25 acres instead of approximately 65.  The students would have been bused back to the fields for athletics and band.  This would have created more expense, not to mention safety for those students.

I believe Evans High School is an integral part of the Evans Community and together with law enforcement we can help solve the crime problem in that area.

Countywide Elected School Chair

I am against the special referendum.  I voted NO. That position would get 2 votes.

Political interest groups and lobbyists would then get involved as that person could sway the vote.

Also, would mean another administrative salary and I believe that since OCPS has fired over 600 teachers this year - they shouldn't add anymore administrative positions.

Time Flip of Middle and High Schools

I don't like the way the school board handled the time flip.  I have questions which I don't believe were answered.  I believe they need to look at a lot more data before making a decision such as this which effects so many people.  Speaking to other involved parties, such as the County Commission (who are spending 1.6 million more on the after school program) would have been a good idea.  I still believe we need to take a good hard look at the numbers to see if they are saving what they anticipated.  I would like to know how many high school students had a job and how many watched siblings in the afternoons.  Pushing the financial burden to others doesn't solve any problems.

A Statement From Laura Keller:

I would like to thank everyone who have and continue to support me in this race for the Orange County School Board seat in District 7.   We are almost there!

Although this election’s focus is the change in Washington, I believe the time has come for a change not only in the Federal administration but especially here at home where local government has a direct effect on our daily lives.

My primary interests for participating in the school board race are:

• Enhance the ability of the school board to communicate more effectively with the parents and community,

• Responsible management of the OCPS budget

• Most importantly, keeping the needs of the students and teachers first and foremost.

I believe we do not need more administrative expense, we have to work more efficiently with the present positions and see that the most dollars go to providing the best education possible for our communities’ children.

Laura Keller's Commitment

Laura Keller will bring fresh ideas and accountability to the 7th District. Based on her hands-on knowledge within the schools and her accounting background, she brings to the table sound financial planning and can skillfully dig into the numbers presented to the School Board.

Laura Keller will be able to determine whether the numbers presented in rezonings are correct and reasonable for the communities affected. Laura will be looking at students and teachers first to make sure they are not adversely affected in the moves.

Laura Keller is in the community daily so she will see where bridges can be built between the schools, cities, county and civic organizations to help improve the students' and community's pride in their schools.

Communities, schools and teachers working together improve student grades, resulting in the improvement of the grades of the schools. Laura Keller leads by the example she has put forth the past 14 years working with school administrators, teachers, parents and students.

It's time we had a representative that will listen to the concerns of the community from where she is elected.

Thank you for your support!
